Home gardens can be a refuge and a lifeline for many important creatures.
Having an abundance of flowering plants provides food for many pollinators. Did you know that honeybees are not the only insects that help pollinate? Pollinators can include bumblebees, mason bees, leaf cutter bees, different types of flies (many of whom are bee mimics), wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles, hummingbirds, and bats.
Planting many different types of flowering plants, with different shapes, blooming at different times of year helps ensure the continuous food supply for these small important creatures.
A pollinator friendly garden also means leaving stems and leaf litter over the fall, winter, and early spring, offering a water supply, patches of logs, rocks, little hidey holes, and bare soil here and there. Variety and untidiness is important to these little guys.
