Raven's Roots Ethnobotany Field Immersion

https://ravensroots.org/ethnobotanyfieldimmersion

From the blurb: “In this 4 month course, we’ll study Washington state’s native and naturalized plants by visiting every ecosystem it has to offer (desert, alpine, subalpine, montane, wetland and 2nd and old growth forests). We’ll go far beyond plant identification and cover edible, medicinal, utilitarian and wildlife enhancing uses as well. Our overall goal is to facilitate connection to the natural world through our relationship with plants. To get you to slow down and not only identify and use the plants around you, but understand what their role is in the overall ecosystem.”

I am an apprentice instructor for this course, along with Instructors Gabe Garms, Elisha Klco, and Reisha Beck. Class takes place one weekend a month for four months, overnight camp in various places in the state.

Fall Prep: Seed Saving, Soil Building, Propagation

This will be my last garden tour/talk of the year. We will focus on tasks to be done coming into fall and winter: seed saving, plant propagation, and soil building.

Seed saving is one of my most happily anticipated garden tasks. It is so fun and rewarding to see the plants you’ve been caring for all year produce seed which you can collect and save for next year, or to share with others. We will discuss how to collect, store, and start seeds that you save.

Plant propagation can include seed starting, but we will also talk about layering and dividing, two of the simplest ways you can propagate plants that might not start as readily from seed.

Building the soil is a long-game process, but there are many things you can do now (and all year, really) to help promote the microscopic web of life in your garden soil. We’ll talk about some straightforward things to do (and things not to do) that will help build up the micro-biodiversity in your garden.

To be honest, my garden (and maybe yours too) starts to look a little sad and shabby this time of year. But fall brings cooler temps, more rain, and thoughts of slowing down to rest over the winter. I love the fall and there is still lots we can do to improve our gardens when the active growing season is winding down.

Location: 3606 Taylor Ave., Bellingham WA. We will meet rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIER TIME! Parking on Taylor Ave. Kids welcome, please no dogs. I’ll have a walk-specific handout you can have with the bullet points of the talk and resources to assist you. Depending on the weather, I’ll have hot or cold herbal tea to share. Hope to see you!

Garden Tour and Plant Giveaway: Supporting Pollinators with your Garden

For this tour/talk, I’ll be focusing on how to help support pollinator populations in your garden with plants and other practices.

There are many ways you can help pollinators in your garden beyond just planting a lot of flowers. We will talk about flower varieties, shapes, timing, and colors, and other ways you can help create habitat and an inviting home for beneficial bugs. A variety of helpful invertebrates is a critical component to a balanced mini-ecosystem in your garden.

We will make our way through the whole garden, I’ll be pointing out plants and discussing ideas along the way. Questions are welcome anytime! I’d love it to be more of an active group discussion situation rather than a lecture by me.

Afterwards, I’ll have some herbal lemonade to share as well as a handout with information on pollinator plants, recommended books and websites, and resources for shopping.

I’m not sure what plants I’ll have available at this point, but any that I have will need new homes ASAP and will be offered on a free/donation basis.

Please use sun protection as the garden is likely to be hot at this time of day. Kids are welcome, but please no dogs. Parking is available along Taylor Ave. The location is 3606 Taylor Ave in Bellingham, near I-5 exit 252.

Garden Tour and Plant Giveaway: Medicinal Herbs Focus

For my June garden tour, we’ll be focusing on some easy to grow, and easy to use, medicinal herbs.

We’ll make our way through the whole garden, stopping along the way to talk about certain herbs that have grown well for me, and that I enjoy making remedies from. I’ll talk about how they like to grow, what other helpful permaculture functions they have, and how to use them in your own home apothecary.

Some herbs I plan on talking about include mints, lemon balm, yarrow, St. John’s Wort, fireweed, sage, echinacea, mugwort, calendula, elderflower and elderberry, hops, raspberry, motherwort, arnica, anise hyssop, and others. Questions are welcome the whole time!

At the end, I’ll have a flyer you are welcome to take with information on medicinal herbs, including tips on growing, using, where to buy plants and seeds, and a recommended book and website list. I will have plants available if you wish to take a look at those as well. They are really in need of new homes and going in the ground, so I’ll be basically offering these on a free/donation basis. Please give them a home!

It can get hot in my garden this time of year, so I recommend using sun protection/hat/sunglasses. I will have some fresh herbal lemonade available to share as well.

Location: 3606 Taylor Ave., in the Ridgemont neighborhood of Bellingham, WA. Parking will be available on Taylor Ave. Kids welcome, please no dogs. Tour will start at ~4:30. I hope you can make it!

I will have a flyer you are welcome to take with information on the plants, including tips, sources for seeds, nurseries, and my favorite books and websites. Afterwards, I’ll have some plants for sale if you wish to take a look. (card/cash/Venmo).
